When I first wrote my blog about red hair I did not know it would be my most popular post. I Have red hair-get over it! Some have expressed they do not have red hair but love it and have always wanted to be a red head. Others have shared that they are a red head and embrace it and feel special and unique. Then there is the last kind of response and not very many of this one but it breaks my heart…
They are young and have red hair and absolutely hate it. They have even tried to disguise the color of their hair with hats, scarves and hair dye (note: red hair is near impossible to change without severely damaging you hair or ending up with a color you weren’t really trying for-believe me I went through hundreds of bottles of “Sun In” in the 80’s thinking this next bottle would take me to the beautiful blonde I was aiming for. I always ended up with brassy orange hair that looked like cotton candy). They are so depressed over the teasing they get because of their red hair.
They ask my advice as to what they should do? First of all I feel their pain. Hair is your crowning glory and also a measure of your self-image, prestige and confidence. Hair is also your body’s barometer indicating good health or lack of it. So It’s more than being vain. Being a redhead is like being on display. And, when one is born shy, like I was, being a natural redhead is uncomfortable at times. As you may know, shyness makes one simply want to blend in with the wall or other surroundings; having naturally red hair has the opposite effect from blending in. I can’t hide very well! Like it or not, I was born to be noticed. Trying to disguise the color is a lot of work and very exhausting. I want to tell those being teased to embrace their hair color and be proud, but I know that’s easier said than done. I want to provide them with some good comebacks when they are getting teased. So I googled some solutions- here are some suggestions (good and bad):
- Ignore them and keep smiling – again, easier said than done. My favorite comeback, is a lack of one.
- You could even make fun of them for being one of those “plain haired” people.
- “You’re just jealous.” seems to work fine, then when they deny it just go, “Yeah, ok.” and give them a pitying look.
- Laugh about it and make fun out of yourself. “Hey this guy looks like a leprechaun” – your response – “come help me find a pot of gold”
- Just say “I already know I have ginger hair you freak are you looking for the dumb *** award?” and laugh.
- Just say “yeah, i have red hair. And.. you have (whatever color) hair. So.?”
- ”Your ginger!” ”Really? I didn’t realize” It just shows them for the idiots they really are.
- Sarcastically “Nice hair” - your response “thanks” Also try: “Thanks I appreciate your concern.”
- Punch them in the face! (just kidding, not a positive way to deal with teasing)

Realize that all hair colors have stereo types. The only reason that they are be picking on you is because they are jealous and insecure about themselves. I’m sure you’ve heard this all before. YOu should feel rather special to have such a unique hair color. I sure am able to save a lot of money by being a natural redhead! keep your chin up!
Gustav Klimt tended to favor redheads in his art
I would love to get some more good comebacks from readers
